Changed our lives
We live on 7 acres of unfenced property. We have a 1 1/2 year old very energetic chocolate lab. We would let Duke outside and he always wanted to wander and explore. He would always come back but I was very concerned about his safety as we have a paved road that carries a fair amount of traffic. My fear was he would run out in front of someone and get hit or cause them to have an accident. For this reason we had gotten to the point of putting him on a cable ANYTIME he was outside which was really not fair to him. So I started looking at underground containment systems. I did a lot of shopping and this system was getting the best reviews. Also I like the fact it can handle up to 100 acres if I ever get the urge to expand his boundary. For now, the 1000 feet has worked out just fine.....gives him more than ample room to run. Installation was simple and straightforward but fairly labor intensive when it comes to burying the wire. I rented a gas powered lawn edger which was perfect for digging the trench....this was a big time and muscle saver. We laid the wire out in the pattern we wanted, hooked it up to the box to make sure we were getting connectivity and then I just trenched as close to the wire as I could get. We used a wooden paint stick to push the wire into the trench and tried to cover everything up as best we could. When all was buried and hooked up, we installed the flags as detailed in the setup instructions. Now let's see if this thing works. Results - I was really concerned whether any radio controlled device could contain Duke because he is the most energetic dog I have ever seen. He loves to run and he does it with fireplace logs in his mouth which he has pulled from our wood pile. This dog is strong, determined, and full of curiosity and energy....unstoppable. So I followed the training instructions as indicated in the setup guide. By the second day he had learned that he didn't want to get too close to the flags. By day three he had been pretty well trained. I kept up with the training for a couple of more days although it was obvious he had learned. Amazingly he learned with setting the collar off just three times. After that, the initial beep was enough to stop him in his tracks. After a few more days he wouldn't go close enough to the flags to even make the collar beep. Within two weeks we became comfortable enough to let Duke go out by himself unsupervised. Now that we have had the fence installed for a couple of months I am fully confident Duke will remain contained. In fact I have been meaning to write this review but an experience this morning prompted me to finally get it written. I looked out the window in the back of the house and Duke is standing there with a large doe staring him down.....she was 20 yards out. I watched and Duke just stood there staring but not offering to run after her. She then took off and then she was followed by two offspring....WOW Duke just stood there not even making a move to try and breach his containment area. THIS WAS AN AMAZING TEST. This fence has changed our lives in that we don't have to go outside and hook the dog up to a cable every time he wants to go out. It has changed Duke's life because he is free to do what he loves best. Run Run Run It worked on a dog for whom I thought there was little hope. WE ALL ARE HAPPY.
