Ignore the brigading trashing the book. It is a need to read
This is not a history, it is the personal journey of a historian. It presents a well organized and documented attack on the Lost Cause myth and how it fuels racism today.
You can see how loved the myth is with the brigading of reviews to drive down the rating of the book. Quite a few it is clear haven’t read it. Just the suggestion St Lee was no saint is sufficient.
The noble southern gentleman Lee who broke his oath to West Point and the Army is presented in the myth as having no choice but defend his beloved Virginia in reality he was the only one of eight Virginians holding the rank of colonel in the US Army to turn traitor. He was also the only one of the eight wealthy because of slaves.
It is sad to see the lies of the Lost Cause entrenched today. Margret Mitchell once wrote one purpose of the klan was to stop Blacks from voting 7 or 8 times. Today it is prettied up to say in the cities or Democrats but the meaning remains.
The book is a small step to tell a truth people do not wish to hear.
