Sprout It, Sprout It, Sprout It Out Loud!!!
I have been gardening for 3 years now. Each year, I've tried to start seeds inside. I've reused plastic trays, egg cartons, book shelves, etc. Most of the time the seeds sprout, but I lose at least 50% by the time they are ready to plant. I thought I'd give the Hydrofarm Germination Station with Heat Mat a try this year.
It's an amazing deal with the heating mat. Also comes with a dome and water tray. The dome has a vent on the top and left and right sides. The flaps aren't very reliable though. They keep falling off when I turn them.
I built a light stand out of scrap wood and a shop light that I bought at a re-use store (see picture). I bought Jiffy-7 peat pellets, but they are too big for this kit. I put some water in the water tray and soaked the pellets. Then I cut the netting off the pellets (planned to do anyway) and filled the compartments with peat. Then I sowed the seeds.
After one day I saw a sprout (basil)! After 4 days, quite a few seeds have sprouted; basil, cornflower, bush beans, squash, cucumber, chamomile, daisy, melon, etc. So far so good.
The seed tray has holes in the bottom already, so that's a plus. However, the seed tray is pretty flimsy. I don't think it will last terribly long.
