This does everything you need
This shock collar is a "first-time" experience for me as well as for my dog; it was a good experience, at least for me. I was able to change my dog's attitude about wandering off the premises in just one easy lesson. It claims to be waterproof, and my dog tested that feature almost immediately, and so far, a few total submersions hasn't hurt it.
Pros:
1. Both the transmitter and receiver have power saving features; most importantly, the receiver will go to "sleep" when the dog is sleeping and not moving, it will wake up when the dog becomes active. The receiver, however, does remain powered until you actually shut it off; personally, I would leave it on all the time, because, while the unit is in its "sleeping," either while it is on or off the dog, it uses minimal power, and secondly, to turn it off or back on, you need to pop out a hard to get to waterproof plug to push the on/off button. To minimize that issue, I only turn it off when I have to take the waterproof plugs out to charge it, or if I know it won't be used for a long period of time.
2. There are three functions to notify your dog 1.Beep 2. Vibration 3. Shock. The vibration and shock modes are infinitely variable from 0 to 100%.
3. Waterproof... so far as my own experience is concerned.
4. Two different lengths of shock probes.
5. An LED shock testing light.
6. Rechargeable transmitter and receiver with USB wall charging plug; so any USB charger can be used with the cable.
7 Fully adjustable collar that snaps on and off the dog easily.
8. Very reasonable price
Cons:
1. The water proof plugs in the ports to charge and power on/off the receiver are hidden behind the collar and hard to get to.
2. Unknown longevity! Inasmuch as this is a rechargeable device dependent on the type and quality of the non-replaceable rechargeable batteries, it will have a "limited" lifespan. Rechargeable batteries always fail sooner or later.... usually sooner. However, the price point of the unit makes it very expendable if it lasts more than a year; further more, if you can't figure out how to train your dog within the lifetime of this economical unit, then you have more serious issues, and buying another collar is not the answer.
As a footnote in the use of this apparatus, I think there should be only two notifications your dog should receive during training; that being your own voice commands and or the shock from the collar. The use of the beep or vibration just adds an extra layer of confusion and continued dependance on a collar. You'll notice in many of the reviews, there are so many dog owners that are reluctant to use and are even proud, not to have to use the shocker; and instead learned how to control their dog the beeper. Those owners will always have to have a collar that beeps involved in controlling their dog. Wise up folks! Simply use your voice (instead of the beeper) and then the shocker for reinforcement. It will only be a short period of time before you can pitch the shock collar entirely and control your dog with your voice. The beeping and vibrating functions on a shock collar are gimmicks that the manufacturers incorporated to keep you and your pet forever dependent on their product.
UPDATE: March 11, 2015 This unit is still working excellent, and I have just now given it to my in-laws to train their dog. My dog learned to stop in his tracks and "listen" to me when I called his name and said "NO." It just took a couple of outings (two or three shocks the first time out and just one or two shocks the second time out.) I did not use this collar to train my dog to come, sit, stay, lay down… etc. Those type commands were taught and reinforced with rewards. I only used the collar to simply stop my dog from whatever activity he was engaged in and to listen to me. My voice "NO" command was the only "warning" I gave my dog for him to stop what he was doing; if he didn't stop, I simply shocked him. Now, when I call him by his name he usually looks at me for direction; if he ignores me, I command him with a strong "NO" and he always stops and waits for more directions. I do not suggest "confusing" you dog with the beeps and vibrations features on the collar. Get straight to the point. I had this collar on my dog for about two weeks; he was trained within the the first two days; he wore the collar in the water 5 or 6 times. It has been sitting in the drawer ever since then. I took it out to send to my wife's sister; I completely checked it out, and it is working fine. Well spent money!
