Is this fan worth its premium price tag?
As I look up at my newly installed Haiku fan, I ask my self, "Do I have buyers remorse right now?" But lets back up a bit.
What is it replacing? an $89 dollar fan from a big box store. Nothing was wrong with my other fan. It wasn't super loud. It moved a decent amount of air. It went clockwise, counterclockwise. Had four lights and two pull chains.
What it didn't have was a remote and WiFi connectivity. I guess this isn't a big deal to most people but I really liked the idea of integrating a a ceiling fan into my smart home.
Upon unboxing, it looks a little startling. I have installed several fans prior and they were all realtively easy to assemble.
This particular fan wasn't hard by any means, but it was a bit time consuming. (I was still under 30 minutes for the install).
I was saddened (but I knew) that there is so much plastic on this fan. Literally everything is plastic. The blades look "real" enough, I suppose.
It's an attractive modernized fan, for sure. So what else do I like about it?
-The fan is a marvel to look at while it's spinning. No vibration or wobble at all. None.
-It is super quiet -- on slower speeds. It can get pretty loud on higher speeds just because the sheer amount of air it's pushing around.
-It is attractive. Not all people will like this. It's far different looking than a traditional fan.
-The integrated LED lighting. It can be super bright or dimmed. There are quite of in-between light brightness' too.
-Comes with two down rods. I used the shorter 3" rod as I hung this fan on a 8' ceiling. It also comes with two light covers. A white one and a "smoked one for likely more diffused light. I kept the white one on.
-WiFi enabled! Cool. Alexa can control it. My cellphone can control it! ONLY if the wall switched is left on, naturally. Very easy connection to my home network here.
-The remote. Speed, light brightness, timers, sleep mode, etc. Great handy remote that works well
-Woosh mode. It's neat. The fan changes pace a bit every so often to make it feel like a natural breeze is coming through an open window vs steady airflow from a fan.
-The LED blue light indicators. They will change as you play with the fans speed, mode, etc.
What didn't I like?
Before I get into this, i'll be honest. I have far fewer things about this fan thus far that I don't like vs what I do like. However, I feel they're big players.
-Lots of connections. Previous fan had three wires to my home electric. Wire nuts and done. The Haiku has smilar, but due to all of it's features there are several quick connects. You have to also slide the controller in before you close up the top unit after install. My recently built home had a pretty shallow box in the ceiling for a fan so this made tucking the wires a bit more difficult, but was still able to do it.
-Why no LED color lighting? at the cost of 7 other fans, lets give a little bit too, shall we?
-PLASTIC. I would have loved to see at least the fan blades made of a nice light wood and i'll get back to this on my next bullet point. The housing of this unit that is up top feels flimsy, not that you'd ever touch it. Mine came with a few scratches already on it however it's 8' away. The whole assembly minus the steel bracket makes me feel like this fan COULD fall but I know it won't.
-COST! Everything, everything above becomes an issue when factoring cost. Sure, I love how quiet it is and the air it moves. But is it worth $700+ dollars after figuring tax? That is going to be a personal decision on your part. For me, it's not worth the cost. Will I return it? No, But I don't know if i'll be buying more. I have 5 other fans in my house and I'd like them to all be this fan but that is several thousand dollars.
I really like the fan and i'd rate it at three stars due to cost but the product itself deserves 5 so i'll leave it at four. Sure, I don't mind paying for premium products. I just don't know if this fan fits that descriptor.
