It's even better than you think it is.
For background, I rowed in college, and mountain biking has always been my passion. I had a Concept 2 rower for a few years, and when I heard they were coming out with a bike, I was faced with a dilemma. I wanted both, but couldn't financially justify having two different $1k machines. My wife liked the rower too, but she had been wanting a peloton thing, so ultimately we decided to sell the rower to get the concept 2 bike erg.
When I first got on, I set up a 10k ride (basically equivalent to a 5k row or a ~20:00 single distance). My first impression was that it was so smooth and seemingly effortless to pedal. I looked and saw that I was clocking a 1:45/1000m pace, and I thought "interesting, I guess it's a little easier than a rowing machine". About 3 minutes in, a deep sense of panic and fear set in that this is going to hurt a lot more than I anticipated. I slowed back to a 1:55 pace. Legs started burning. I started sweating profusely and muttering profanity to myself. Around 7k in I met the devil and everything in me wanted to stop. By 9k I was in a dark, dark place. I finished the 10k around a 1:58 avg split. I stumbled away in awe. This thing is amazing.
I still love the rowers, but I would say that I love this thing equally, if not more. And if you know anything about the concept 2 rowers, that's high praise.
Couple of points:
-you can get an ipad mount and watch peloton if you're into that sort of thing (my wife likes it)
-half the price of a peloton, and I don't know anything about peloton quality but concept 2 is better
-it will bluetooth with zwift on your ipad
-the clutch flywheel thing is really nice. You can stop pedaling without it ripping your feet off like a trad spin bike
-you can get a brutal workout by itself doing long distance or intervals, or you can sub it into crossfit type workouts
-it looks harmless but it will steal your soul
-I can't recommend it enough
