Spliced in a 100 Ohm resistor to reduce the exhaust fan speed and that easily cut the fan noise in half ...
I bought this for my son's birthday for his dorm room. I takes up less space than a TV and to be honest he never watches TV anyway. Just Netflix, YouTube, ESPN and torrents. The only knock I have on this projector is its loud exhaust fan. I took the projector apart (there are only five screws...one on each corner and one in the middle) and it has a nice aluminum heat sink with copper heat pipes running to an aluminum radiator that the exhaust fan blows across. There are actually two fans inside the projector, one somewhere inside the light path I couldn't see perhaps cooling the LCD panel and/or optics and the exhaust fan which is the louder of the two. I took a chance and spliced in a 100 Ohm resistor to reduce the exhaust fan speed and that easily cut the fan noise in half. We'll see how long the LED bulb lasts with the reduced cooling but LED's are fairly rugged and this projector is so inexpensive that it was worth the risk. UPDATE: After a month in the dorm room and many hours of operation my son reports that the projector is still working great with the reduced fan speed. UPDATE #2: After 4 months the projector is still going strong with the reduced fan speed. UPDATE #3: My son is back home from college for Christmas break and brought home the projector so I opened it up to take pictures of the resistor I had added to reduce the fan speed/noise. It was a red and black wire, not red and white.
