Good compromise between all chemicals (unsafe, but easy to rub in) and no chemicals (safe, but impossible to rub in)
Recently, I went on a three month tour of "safer" sunscreens and sunblocks using the EWG website. I tried 6-7 of the options that ranked well (1's and 2's on EWG) and were available on Amazon. The only one that worked for me (my criteria below) was Babyganics partially chemical based (+zinc oxide) formula. I had to settle with a "moderately" hazardous sunscreen (per EWG) because all of the sunblocks I tried (non chemical) left me looking like a ghost no matter how much time and effort I took to rub in the lotion. So that appears to be the compromise: look quite pale using the safest sunblocks or use something a bit less safe that doesn't show. I'm not vain, but I also don't like having pretty white residue showing all over me. My criteria for a sunscreen: must be able to rub in and not be visible within a few minutes on face, neck, arms, and legs; must not leave the skin oily; must not come off easily with sweat and burn the eyes; must be relatively easy rub into hairy areas without leaving residue (scruff on face, hair on arms/legs). Babyganics satisfied the criteria and is safer than the average, better known brand name sunscreens on the market. I have yet to find a bette option - but hope to find something, eventually, that is less chemical based that also rubs in relatively easy.
