What’s a good activity to start in the dark at 1am? The smart answer is probably not to open a bag of 1500 ladybugs and distribute around the garden. But I’m a willful soul, and I got it in my head that this had to happen TONIGHT. My plan was to follow the directions and release a few tbsps of these aphid eating “heroes“ tonight and space this rationing out over the course of a week or two. But these over ambitious mercenaries of the insect world got the better of me. The second I opened the top of the mesh bag it was as if they all made a mad dash for the exit. Error #1. Opening the bag indoors. Don’t do it, no matter how tempting, no matter how sedate they appear in the bag. Error #2. Lack of a plan of how to store the remaining “hired guns” to space out the operation. Error #3. Holding a flashlight near the open end of the mesh bag. It’s definitely as effective as posting a fire exit sign. I had ladybugs up my arms, on my shirt, in my hair, around the outside of the mesh bag, on my kitchen counter, on the floor, on my dog’s head,You get the idea. But the good news is that I think I released about half and somehow herded the rest into a plastic container with holes and sent them back to the fridge to call the heck down. Geez!
