I got this for my 11 year old daughter and she really likes it a lot. The dressmaker's form is sooo cute! It also comes with lots of other goodies. She has played with it for two solid days now and more important, is really interested in learning how to sew. I am not suprised that a nine year old struggled with it...however it is marked "10 and up." It is really not so much a toy as a mini design studio. I think the best thing is that the dress form can be used for draping fabrics which is an essential skill for young designers! My daugher has pinned two dresses together and they looked amazing. I bought this thinking it would be a fun and non threatening way to learn sewing, which I never really learned and always regretted. Plus it's just like Project Runway! I also recommend a few accessories which are available at Hearthsong, like a teeny sewing machine and a sewing kit. Overall, this is one of the nicest craft kits I've seen.
