Great Bang for the Buck
After many hours of researching phones, I came to a decision on these, and I don't regret it at all. Since amazon reviews helped me so much to make my choice, I figured I'd write one myself...
Let me start off by saying I had been debating between these, Sennheiser HD-202s, and a couple Audio Techinca models. The JVC HARX700 was at the top of my list until the price started rising higher and higher...
I almost spent another 15 bucks and got either a set of ATH-M30, ATH-M35, or ATH-M40 phones. After listening to the HTF600s, I'm not sure if anything else in this price range would have gotten me any better of a headphone. It was a decision to either get a very high quality set in the hundreds of dollars price range, or get a decent midrange set. I'd imagine most midrange sets sound pretty similar... so why spend another 15 bucks? And yes, If I stumble into some money, ATH M50s are on my want list... It'd be nice to try those (or something similar) out as well...
Many headphone reviews I've read compare them to other phones. I'm not an audiophile, and I don't own 15 different sets of headphones. I do have one other set to compare them to though - Bose "Around Ear" headphones. A few people, including myself, were interested in a comparison and got to test them one after the other... Nobody claimed they could tell a difference. Granted, that wasn't a scientific test, and none of us are audiophiles, but I do think that says something.
SOUND QUALITY: As far as sound quality goes, I have to say they sound great, for what's that worth. They're capable of more bass than I need when I mess with equalization. With a no equalizer, everything sounds balanced and clear from all frequencies. Once again, great sounding. I've literally heard sounds in some of my favorite songs that I've never heard before.
COMFORT: These headphones are plenty comfortable in terms of them not hurting anything. Nothing on me becomes sore. The cups fit all the way over my ears and I have a pretty large head and ears. I'm not sure what the material that touches your head is made from, but these headphones get pretty warm. They're not breathable at all. I usually get a little head sweat going on (yeah, they peel off my head when I take them off), but that's really no big deal. It might even be a personal thing - maybe you won't encounter this...
DURABILITY: Don't know what to say here. The cord is thick (and pretty long - 10ft?) The construction seems solid, but I haven't had them long, so I can't really comment other than speculation.
SOUND ISOLATION: Terrible. If there's not music playing, I can hear everything around me pretty much plain as day. Likewise, it's not that difficult for others around you to hear what's coming out of your headphones. It works both ways... I mean obviously, some noise is blocked, but it's very little. If you're looking for a headphone that will block outside noises, look elsewhere. This may not necessarily be a negative to some people though. Whether or not a headphone is open changes the way the audio sounds, and some people may prefer this. This isn't a gripe for me; I'm not trying to block out sound, so it doesn't make any difference to me. Just a warning though, if you're expecting noise isolation, look elsewhere.
All in all - great sound, and an awesome set of headphones for a relatively low price of admission.
