It takes some muscle. But it is worth it. Having a bulky machine on stairs is no fun. This has no cord. It is light. It fits perfectly in the corner of each stair. There was a spot that has been bugging me for months...it was gone after one pass. The battery was running low as I finished. So a charge lasts about 15 to 20 minutes. All the stains on my stairs came up quickly. I used the spot and stain remover that came with it (two bottles) to pre treat. Then I just used water for everything else. The soap has a nice, pleasant smell, maybe floral. It is not a strong smell, very subtle. It is nice that you can see through all the different liquid compartments so you know when things are running low or too full. Rinsing all the parts took maybe two minutes. So easy! Any part that touches yucky water is easy to clean. The part that vacuums the dirty water and soap comes off so it can be cleaned.
