Hey, This Thing Works!
I had posted a preliminary review which wasn't too favorable. I have removed that and am replacing it with this more thorough take. Vivien was kind enough to offer a full refund after I posted my initial review. I will not be taking that refund as I intend to purchase a couple more of these feeders. But thanks, anyway, Vivien. That speak volumes for your integrity in the Amazon Marketplace.
My previous experience with a different brand of feeder was, at first, wondrous because we had all these hummingbirds coming to feed. That gradually turned into a nightmare as the bees followed, and then the ants, and then the crawlies. Ultimately the experience was ruined due to the lack of mechanisms to prevent bees and ants invading the feeders and turning them foul. I even tried using fishing line to hang the feeders to deter the ants. I used the lightest gauge fishing line and the ants still got into the feeders....one at a time crawling down the fishing line.
So I bought the MAGGIFT feeder as a solution to my problems. It has an ant mote which prevents the ants from immediately accessing the food. It has slip-on plastic protectors that go on the underside of the feed-holes so as to prevent the bees from accessing the food, yet still allows the hummingbirds to poke their beaks in and drink. After a little trial and error, it works. My error was that I overfilled the feeder and the juice was coming up through the holes. Boy, did that ever attract the bees. They were all over it. Insanely all over it. I even posted a few pics to illustrate in my initial review. I have since replaced those photos with more sensible ones. And I sincerely apologize to Vivien and the folks at Daffodill for my initial review. I'm so sorry.
Here's the thing to remember. If you live in an area with bees, as I do (and there are a lot of bees around here in Woodland Hills,) only fill the feeder about half to two thirds of the way. Don't let the juice come up through the holes; the level of the juice should be just below those slip-on caps that prevent the bees from feeding. If you do that, then you'll have the most success. The pics I've posted here have a few bees. but that's going to be normal. They are still attracted to the feeder, but they CAN'T GET THE FOOD. That's what makes this kind of feeder so wonderful. As I said, I'll be buying at least a couple more. We like to have several feeders in various areas of our yard. So thanks, MAGGIFT!!
