Awesome toy for Ninja Turtles fans!
I read Matt's review and the one he left on the Toys R Us website too and he repeats much of what he says here...but he adds that not only did he not even buy the toy for his kids (his in-laws did, making them look like superheroes in his kids' eyes and probably adding to his bitterness) but he also mentions that his kids LOVE the toy.
And that's the problem I have with this guy's review...he's looking at it in the eyes of a parent who A. Doesn't want to spend money on toys B. Doesn't want to spend time putting it together (and by the way, I put mine together, stickers in all, in about 45 minutes...this guy was probably doing his taxes or tweezing out his gray hairs at the same time he was putting HIS together) C. Doesn't take into account that KIDS ENJOY PLAYING WITH TOYS.
As far as the construction of the toy goes, he's right about the cardboard inserts...they fall off if handled. But the rest of the toys is super solid (even though...OH NO...THE PIPES ARE ONLY HALF-MOLDED! I can lift it in one piece by putting a finger under the power-line and carry it across the room.
Yes, I know the Imaginext playsets are durable and cheaper, but guess what: Imaginext doesn't make Ninja Turtles. And this guy thinks that it doesn't matter to a kid...a toy is a toy is a toy. No, buddy...if someone loves the Ninja Turtles cartoon, they're not going to settle for an Imaginext castle playset...they're going to want a Secret Sewer Lair.
Now, I do have to concur with another of the Matt's points...the price. At $120-$140, this is an expensive toy. But when I was a kid, these were known as the "Big Present." It was always the most expensive gift you got, the biggest under the tree, and the last to be opened. You never thought you would get the Big Present you asked for and when you did, it would blow your little mind. This isn't a toy that you get for your kids because you needed to buy some batteries at Target and your kids saw this on the shelf, this is a toy you get for extra-special occasions: Christmases, birthdays, Straight A's on report cards. And if that's the case, I don't care if I spend $150 bucks on a toy...and I certainly would care even less if my in-laws spent that money instead.
So in short, if your kids love Ninja Turtles, are decent, well-behaved children, and it's the Lord's birthday...get them the Secret Sewer Playset. Or, at the very least, ask your in-laws to buy it for them ;P
