The new best ice cream scoop!
This scoop replaced a Zyliss Metal Ice-Cream Scoop which we'd had for years. I retired it after finding metal flakes from the scoop in my bowl of ice cream. For a replacement scoop I had two few criteria:
- Stainless steel scoop - didn't want more metal flakes
- No mechanical gimmicks like a button or lever to push to eject the ice cream
I did consider the Zyliss again briefly, because it is a good scoop, but recent reviews indicate the metal is flaking off a lot faster than it used to. Our scoop was fine for years before we noticed pitting and bubbling of the metal coating.
I usually don't consider OXO products because I've had a few and I don't like the handle with the soft rubber sides, like on this ice cream scoop: Oxo Steel Ice Cream Scoop.
This scoop is the best scoop I've used. The scoop portion is stainless steel and it has a great shape to it. The tip is pointed which makes it easy to get the scoop moving in very hard or dense ice cream. We sometimes buy Costco's super premium vanilla ice cream which is very dense - it's pretty easy to scoop with this scoop.
The ice cream curls up with this product as you scoop it. That was one complaint I had against the Zyliss scoop - the ice cream would overrun the scoop and get on my hand. This scoop is dishwasher safe, too, and so far so good, it's holding up so far to nightly trips through the dishwasher.
You've probably looked at a lot of ice cream scoops...I know I did. I even read America's Test Kitchen's review of ice cream scoops. They favored the Rösle 12741 Ice Cream Scoop followed by the Zeroll Original 2-Ounce Zeroll Aluminum Scoop. I didn't get the first one because it sounds like (from reviews) the quality has gone down since the manufacturing moved from Germany to China, and I didn't buy the 2nd one because it's not dishwasher safe (yeah, I'm lazy like that). This scoop is also made in China but it appears very well made and I expect it to hold up for years.
Trust me, this is the ice cream scoop to buy. No gimmicks, just a good, solid, stainless steel ice cream scoop. Stop spending so much time looking at scoops and just get this one.
