MOSTLY 5-STAR NOVEL -- BUT THE ENDING WEAKENS IT
As a father who recently lost a daughter, I read this novel-parable with both pleasure and pain. I could get into the very soul of the narrator, Paige Moresco. who lost her husband a few years earlier. i know such a loss and ongoing grief can freeze a person in place. HUMOR AND LIFE WISDOM HELP. The author blends a light style and humor with Paige’s struggle to come out of grief, both for her own sake and for Trey, her teenage son. The parable of trying to grow a garden in a bylaw-controlled neighborhood lends itself to humor and rich life lessons. Those bits of wisdom resonate with me as I'm sure they will with you. CLEVER OVERLAYS. These develop from a guru-author’s motivational advice put into practice by Paige’s new advertising boss. Some lead to groans and humor, some to heartfelt agreement. Right here are great takeaways for readers. CHARACTERS are mostly lovable everyday types, just like folks we meet in our lives. Nothing violent or hateful, but most change sympathetically as the various forms of grief and loss are dealt with. And there is love – slow developing and no mad sex. THE WEAKNESS. There is one character important to the plot who is so exaggerated that I could not believe her actions and accomplishments. No guru in the motivational world would succeed with so many f-words and crude behavior in just a few pages. That really detracts from the tone and credibility of that part of the novel. Also, I thought there were too many plot twists for the sake of trying to surprise us rather than plot development. I found this to be a spiritual and emotion-involving novel, but could’ve been better without the weaknesses later on. PLEASE NOTE: I purchased this through my FIRST READS membership as a Kindle Book. It should be noted as "VERIFIED PURCHASE." But it hasn't as yet shown up as such.
