Buy and use just the refills
It occurred to me that the small opening of the trap might be hindering its effectiveness. So I removed the sticky trap paper and taped it to a 9 inch white styrofoam plate and then placed it under a 40w lamp that I purchased at Walmart for $7.00 Right away the flea count doubled and so I purchased more $7 lamps, bought only refills from Home Depot and taped them to more 9 inch white styrofoam plates and started to place them all over the house. What we noticed was, the fleas seem to concentrate in one area of the house. In this case our laundry room seem to be the hive where fleas were being reproduced in large numbers. Surprisingly where ever the dog was did not produce any large number of hits, probably because he was better bait. But the laundry room was definitely the source or so I thought. As the number of hits started to diminsh there still seem to be a steady stream of fleas consistently which didn't make sense like 10 new hits consistently every day. The rest of the house only produced 0 to 2 hit every couple of days, so you can see the laundry room was still the hive. Then one morning I had to go out to the garage to get something out of the car, when I got back into the laundry room (it is attached to the garage) I noticed a bunch of fleas clinging to my white tube socks. I counted or killed 40 fleas off my white tube socks after only being in the garage 30 seconds! So I quickly place a white styrofoam plate with a Victor refill sticky pad taped to it and place a $7 Walmart lamp over it and waited. Next morning there were over 85 fleas trying to wiggle, jump or pry themselves off the refill. I placed another plate w/ a refill taped to it and as soon as I dropped the plate to the floor 8 fleas jumped onto it! So the garage was definitely where the fleas were coming from and since the laundry room was attached to it, makes sense the laundry room was just the next jumping point for them to make their way into the house. The sticky pads perform better when there is more space to work with as opposed to leaving them in that restricting plasic housing. When the plates get full (takes about 200-300 hits) you just toss the plate w/the sticky paper taped onto it into the trash. I use double sided scotch tape to attach the Victor Refill to a styrofoam plate. That way if you accidently tip over the plate, it won't fall face first on the floor. Afterwards if you can get off the floor it will be filled up w/ dust and all sort of hair etc. I mark off the place in quarters w/ a yellow magic marker so I can count the new hits as they happen. I blot the old hits w/ a Red Magic marker for historical purposes. As you count them each day or week you can tell how the population is being affected. Soon you will notice that the plates are working as the new hits will diminish over time. As a result we noticed that the red itchy welts just above our socks diminshed and now don't exist! And yes the dog is better.
