This was a DNF for me, but the storytelling deserves recognition
I typically force myself to finish everything I start even if it's not my cup of tea. Usually this is because I hate "wasting" my time getting invested in a story to not see it through to the end. Unfortunately, even with the excellent writing and the story's ability to draw me in and hold my attention, there is an aspect that I'm particularly sensitive about and avoid at all costs in my reading adventures. *Content warning (SPOILER) ahead*
I am not a fan of the H and/or h having sexual encounters outside their romance. Being told about an encounter after the fact is one thing (I can usually force myself through something like that), but witnessing the encounter in action from the h's POV (and the H knew she was watching) was too much for me. To be fair this encounter happens before anything remotely "romantic" happens between them and I'm sure it was used more as way to throw the h off and show her the H is "in control" and domineering, but it immediately and completely disengaged me from the story. I didn't even bother finishing the sentence I was reading.
I know this isn't an issue for most readers, but for someone like me who reads a novel a day (it's cathartic for me, helps me ignore the world for a while), I like being able to read reviews and see where others have offered content "warnings" of sorts so I know which stories to avoid. This book does not have a lot of written reviews for it so I felt a little blindsided by the incident, though I pretty much saw it coming and still tried to make myself stick it out anyway due to the intriguing storytelling. I take the blame fully upon myself, given I usually do way more research into reviews before giving a novel a try.
Like I've previously stated, though, I understand this may not be an issue for most readers. I'm particularly picky when it comes to the literature I consume for numerous reasons. I just wanted to leave a review to give a heads up to any other potential readers similar to myself who want to avoid that type of content. If scenes like that don't bother you, I definitely recommend giving this a try because the writing is soooo good.
