It’s real, you just need to take care of it the right way
I understand a lot of people don’t think this is real silk because the texture changes after the first wash. That’s likely because they are using the incorrect detergent. Silk is a protein based fiber and the stain fighting agents in regular detergents are usually enzymes. That’s why it’s vital to ONLY use an enzyme free delicates detergent.
Using an enzyme detergent on a protein-based fiber means the enzymes will break down the silk fibers over time, resulting in holes in your pillowcase in less than a year. Furthermore, that change in texture is likely a result from a film left behind by an enzyme detergent.
Personally I use Heritage Park Luxury Silk & Wool Detergent. It never alters the texture of my silks and makes cleaning and maintaining them a breeze. My silks are the easiest of all my clothes to wash as a result.
Below is a step-by-step guide to cleaning and maintaining your silk pillowcase:
1) Wash it inside out and zip it part way so it can’t flip in the wash. The silky side should only brush against itself in the wash. This is on top of following the manufacturer’s directions of cold water delicate cycle and enzyme free delicate detergent. You can use a laundry bag for extra protection but it’s not super vital.
2) Hang to dry. I don’t care if you dryer has an air dry setting. The air dry cycle can cause damage so please just hang it. It’ll be dry in like 2 hours on a cold day with no sunlight and in half an hour on a warm day with plenty of sun (but don’t dry it in direct sun).
Optional step 3) Iron it inside out. Use the silk or low setting on your iron. Don’t steam it, the heat is too high and will cause damage over time.
The key with maintenance is to be gentle. If you throw it in with your regular wash, use the wrong detergent, and put it in the dryer it’ll have holes in it within a year.
I’ve have mine for three years and it’s made a noticeable difference in my skin and hair. My skin is dry and sensitive and with this pillowcase I don’t wake up with dry patches around my chin and mouth anymore. My hair is less frizzy and greasy too and doesn’t break as easily as before. This is definitely worth the money but you do need to take the time to properly take care of it once a week.
