Good vs Evil - plus a dog. The real Dean Koontz is back
In his newest book, Devoted, Dean Koontz does what he does best. He pits good against evil and wraps the story around a loving and loyal dog. In this tale we have a mildly autistic pre-teen named Woody. The child is crafted wonderfully by Koontz. He’s mute, not because he physically can’t talk but because he is afraid of expressing himself in a wrong way. His mother is a talented artist on her way up in the art world. The father was killed in a tragic accident that Woody is highly suspicious of and feels his father was murdered. The villain is a wealthy and evil man who once wooed the mother. He has committed a heinous crime that took the lives of many in a research facility and when the story opens is on his way to Costa Rica to hide out and live the lavish lifestyle he thinks he deserves. He’s intent on having his old love interest, Woody’s mother, join him. He’s determined to make this happen even though she has only negative memories and feeling towards him. The story unravels itself with the two factions, mother and child on one side pitted against a man with no moral compass or empathy on the other. And then, of course, enters the dog. And oh, what a dog it is. Koontz hits a home run with this book by doing what he does best. Keeping the reader turning the pages far into the night.
