HINT: Read Help Menu First
HINT: Read the Help Menu First. It will save you from some frustration. lol
I am not familiar with the board game, Blokus, so I cannot compare the electronic version to the original version.
The product description for this electronic version says that the play is intuitive, but I didn't find it to be so at first. Luckily, there is a help menu that is very useful for learning how to play the game. The phrasing is a bit odd at time (like an imperfect translation), but it is very understandable. It is via the help menu that I learned how to rotate the pieces, something I wanted to do, but couldn't figure out how to make happen before I read the help. At first, the game was a little frustrating, because I didn't understand how to rotate the pieces. Once I read the help menu and went back to playing the game, however, playing was much more intuitive, and it became fun. Maybe a more accurate statement would be that the game is intuitive for people who already know how to play the board game.
A player is required to place a piece on the corner of one of their former pieces. That is easy enough, but you also cannot place it next to the side edge of any of your pieces that are already in place. And that is where the challenge lies. When it is your turn, the computer places a small red dot in all of the squares that are available for play (a default setting named a "seeds display"). This is a useful feature for cutting down the amount of time required to learn how to play the game. Since I'm a beginner, I'm glad I don't have to waste time identifying the possibilities. Players can also elect to turn this off the seeds display via the options menu to make the game harder once they have gained some experience.
Ultimately, this is a game that is fun and challenging. I'm looking forward to mastering effective strategies, and beating the computer, at the various skill levels of the game. It would be nice if the game included a hint feature to help you learn effective strategies. It would also be nice if you could set the game up to play with fewer than four players, since this would help new players to learn effective strategies more quickly. But for a free app of the day, this is an awesome discovery, and it will be a great way to pass the time during my commute.
