Should charm the Scrooge out of anybody...
I first read The Polar Express in its 1985 release year. Both the book and the later film were extraordinary evocative...so Lionel had its work cut out for it in bringing a three-dimensional version. For both train fans and Polar Express fans: Lionel nailed it.
The engine, coal car, passenger car and observation car are crisply detailed. The remote control controls the audio: train sounds increase with speed, and you can add whistle, bell and "all aboard the Polar Express" announcement. Included track allows either a circle, squared circle or oval layout.
Controller requires 3x AAA batteries, and the engine requires 6x C batteries. My only quibble with the design of this beautiful train is the decision to secure the battery compartment with screws.
Otherwise: I dare you to watch it in motion and not smile.
Even on 90 degree August day, it made me think of the the holidays.
