Slooowww plot, but beautifully written
I'm so torn on how to review this. On the one hand, literally NOTHING happened. But on the other, I enjoyed it anyway. The writing was beautiful (something I can really appreciate in a world of poorly edited RH books). It was well edited, wonderfully detailed, and complex. I LOVED the guys. Their personalities are so distinct and unique. Even without checking the chapter heading, I was always able to tell who was talking. But literally nothing happened. Hope escapes from the compound, the guys find her and take her home with them, and then nothing else happens. 95% of the book is just about Hope and her trauma. She's traumatized from being held in captivity and tortured for 18 years. Understandably so. And realistically, it would make sense that a person would take forever to open up after that. But that doesn't mean I want to read 650 pages about a girl struggling with trauma. It got old fast. Hope is scared all. The. Time. The guys are constantly babying her and trying to help her through it. Okay. That's great. But, again, I don't need 650 pages of it. She's got a monster inside her that she's terrified of and refuses to tell them anything about herself or the compound. This is especially frustrating because we learn that the guys are fighting the same people who held her captive and hearing her story would help them. I could understand not telling them in the beginning when she thought they were human, but after she learned they were lycan she should have opened up. By the end of 650 pages she STILL hasn't told them anything. It was so, so frustrating. The lack of plot movement was especially frustrating because this author has talent with a capital T. Her writing is absolutely gorgeous and she's got an amazing story with beautifully complex characters. So why did she spend 650 pages on the FMC's trauma rather than move the plot along?! Bottom line, I did really, really like this and I definitely recommend it. Just be ready to be frustrated with the lack of plot movement. I hope the next one gets things moving.
