Dreamcolor patio
I bought two sets of these DreamColor lights and ran it underneath the railing of my patio. I bought an additional RGB light kit and ran it underneath my stairs. I had no issue cutting and splicing the RGB light strips so that I could insert extension wires when: (1) running the lights from step to step, and (2) covering two sets of stairs that are approximately 32' of wire away from each other. I drilled holes in the railing and posts for the Dreamcolor strips. However, the Dreamcolor strips were a challenge because I want the microphone positioned at a certain location on my patio, and I want the starting point of the LED strips to be mounted farther than the length of the provided wire. Because you're not supposed to cut Dreamcolor light strips, at my own risk (I'm pretty sure I forfeit my warranty/support doing this), I cut the wires between the pin connector and the power source, and spliced in some extension wire. I discovered that I couldn't insert more than 3' of extension wire before the Dreamcolor signal became "confused" (it lost the ability to control the intended colors, light got "stuck"). I purchased a lower gauge extension wire and a data signal repeater/amplifier and hope to extend the extension wires more than 16'. I'll post updates, but appreciate any input from anybody who has already done this or has expertise with this kind of thing. In the meantime, the setup is very functional, and (at least for now) the patio is in high demand among my family members. The power strip, power adapters, microphones, etc. are all stored in a Suncast 22 gal. java resin wicker storage seat (model SSW1200), where I cut an opening underneath to feed the power/led wires. The storage seat does a great job keeping the equipment dry, and I expect to bring in the equipment during the winter season. I also like the bass that it creates when we put the portable bluetooth speaker in there (next to the microphone). I have this set up on Google assistant, so we can verbally say things like "turn on patio lights at 50 percent", or "set patio lights white". The attached video demo is in Music Mode - Energic. 1/12/2020 conclusion after experimenting with other systems: CON for Govee Dreamcolor vs. competing customizable sytems: 1. I wasn't able to splice in 3-in wire extensions for customizing the distance between strips and my microphones. One of the issues is that their connectors are proprietary. Perhaps someone more skilled in soldering will have no problems, but I would still have questions regarding the 12V power supply. PROs for Govee Dreamcolor vs. competing customizable sytems: 1. You don't have to spend any time researching and coordinating across strip type, controller type, and power supply voltage, assuming you are satisfied with the distance between the microphone and the LED strips. 2. The Govee system is less than half the cost of a customizable system (i.e., IP65 strips, controller, power supply, 3M tape). 3. In my opinion and limited experience, this Govee system has the best controller (for price range). It has all of the following: Alexa/Google Assistant integration, Wifi/Bluetooth control, and cool music patterns.
