First harness our cat likes
Our cat loves to go outside but unfortunately we live too close to the road and we have tried everything to keep him in the backyard (ever heard of a cat fence topper? Well about $100 and 2 days of work and we can now say that doesn’t work). We decided that we might could satisfy his outside needs safely if we take him for regular walks on a leash.
He is a fat and happy rescue cat so the biggest cat harness did not fit him. We tried a strap type harness and he fought us and would not wear it long enough to even try walking him. (another waste of money). This harness however, he did not fight at all when we put it on! We successfully walked him for the first time on the leash and the only problem we had was that he fought and did not want to come back inside.
He is 16 lbs and his chest measured 17 inches so we chose the medium size based on the size chart (med fits 16”-19”). The size chart only showed where to measure a dog so I wasn’t sure on the neck measurement but figured chest needed to fit so went based solely on that. The neck is big on him but the chest fits when adjusted to the smallest setting. I found that when measuring the chest of a cat, you need to pull the measuring tape tight enough that the hairs stand up. My first measurement yielded 19 inches, but I found 2 inches of that was just fluffy fur lol. He could have definitely worn the small and if he loses any more fluff we will need to get a small.
He can back out of the harness if he tried. I think most cats are Houdini and can escape from any harness because they do this thing with their shoulders (almost double jointed like). This one maybe a little easier because the neck is not adjustable and it fits a little big. To fix this problem we also made our cat wear his traditional collar (which he can not escape from) and hooked the collar to the harness.
This harness material is super soft and made of a mesh that will keep him from getting so hot. The color was true to the web ( we ordered red) and the edging is a soft material not nylon. Cat fur does stick to it (he is shedding horribly) but I don’t mind since it is so soft and comfy.
We really like this harness and our cat loves that he finally gets to go outside.
