Funky taste solved...
I purchased the Megahome Distiller to be able to remove fluoride from my tap water. It does this quite effectively. Using an Extech FL700 fluoride meter , my tap water fluoride measured 1.4ppm before distilling. After some adjustments to the distillation process described below, my distilled water registered only .2ppm. While not perfect, even Glenwood Distilled water measured .2ppm. However, the one thing that was disappointing was that my distilled water tasted funky (even with the charcoal pack placed in the spout). It was the same smell and taste as the brown tinted residue at the bottom of the distiller tank at the end of the distillation process. So after some trial and error and luck, the solution to this problem was quite simple. First, I changed to using an appliance timer to ensure that the distiller shut off with about 1" of water left in the distiller (I found this tip on YouTube). Without it, the unit would shut off using its internal thermal over-load device which activates when essentially all the water is distilled out causing an excessive amount of residue "flavor" to make it's way into the distilled water as the last amount of water boils off. While the taste of the distilled water was significantly improved using the timer, I could still taste that residue in the water and I was still disappointed because that taste to me was offensive and I knew that if i didn't fix it, I wouldn't continue to use it. Luckily however, I was able to solve this too. After filling the distiller tank with tap water, I decided to throw one of the charcoal packs directly into the full distiller tank to see if it would soak up that odor in the tank during the distillation process. This did the trick! While the pack burst open in the distiller tank, the distilled water in the glass pot was odor and taste free. Because it's not cost effective for me to use a charcoal pack in each gallon I distill, today I decided to open a 600mg capsule of activate charcoal and dumpe it in the bottom of the distiller tank before adding my water (see photo). After the distilling was completed, the water in the glass pot was odor free and tasteless. This water measured .2ppm for fluoride. This is a great solution for anyone struggling with a funky taste or smell in the distilled water as the activated charcoal capsules are not expensive. One final note, after distilling, I put about 1/4tspn of Himalayan Salt in the distilled water and use a stir plate and magnet to mix it up (see photo). This water is great! Odor free, tasteless and soft. Very silky to drink. While this process is a bit involved, I still prefer this to lugging plastic jugs of distilled water home from the store and drinking water that tastes like HDPE.
