Solid hardware overshadowed by cruel software
My kindle arrived and I could not be happier. No more Covid walks to the park desperately searching for shaded areas to read my LCD-backlit ipad. Others pointed out how irritating the placement of the on/off switch (on the bottom) of the kindle is. I took note of this when I received mine but hasn’t really been a problem for me. There are two absolutely devastating software features. 1. I was a totally different person a decade ago; different career path, interests, etc. I had accumulated a fair amount of SEO and marketing books, most of them garbage. Unfortunately, every single time I open my kindle I have to scroll through a page or two of these books that I’d wish I’d had forgotten about. AMAZON DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO HIDE/ARCHIVE BOOKS”. Your only option is to permanently delete (requiring a whole new purchase of you decide you want to read again sometime in the future) or let these books haunt your library. Amazon take a page out of Apples book for once. Any purchased music, tv or movies from the iTunes Store can be deleted from your library without any trace. However, Apple (like amazon) obviously has records of what you’ve purchased and if you choose to do so, you can dig into the iTunes account and find a “hidden purchases” section with all the media that you had permanently deleted from your library. Honestly this is a no brained. From a technological perspective, amazon has 0 reason to not allow this except to torture you. I’m convinced. 2. I also have accumulated dozens of books from the iBooks store. If you’re expecting to transfer these over to your kindle, don’t, unless you’re comfortable spinning up a VM and “homebrewing” a couple command line DRM crackers. This is actually what I do for a living now so wasn’t sooo painful but not that fun. For you less computer savvy people out there, consider those books gone. I don’t really have a problem with Apple/amazon playing their “proprietary software” games. Well, I’d do, but I understand why. It just is super inconvenient for the end user. Thanks guys. Because of these two issues I’ve gone so far as to research other ereaders that will happily accept iBooks and/or kindle books with open arms. Another 5-10 more times of scrolling through “10 seo tips for a web marketer” I may just have to.
