AMAZING camping pad with one potential design flaw (but 5 years later no problem). UPDATED 2022!
Before I review the Klymit Insulated Static V, a bit of background is due. I've used therm-a-rest pads exclusively for the last 15 years. I've recently become frustrated with my pads as I'm a side sleeper and they simply didn't provide the level of comfort and weight balance that I desired. In my quest for comfort and light weight, I considered several new pads from therm-a-rest and Big Agnes. However, these pads cost anywhere from $80-$150+. I simply couldn't justify the cost (especially since the Klymit pad frequently can be purchased for less than $70). But then I came across the Klymit Static V and everything changed. On to the review. The Static V comes in an uninsulated and an insulated model. I purchased the insulated model because I wanted to be able to use the pad in the spring and fall. This pad is awesome. It is reasonably lightweight compared to the thickness of pad you receive. Rolled up, is slightly larger than a standard sized Nalgene bottle. It takes me approximately 12 breaths to fully inflate it. Once inflated, it is COMFORTABLE! I've slept on this on my back, sides, and stomach and it blows my Therm-a-rest away! No more sore backs in the morning. The V baffles are extremely comfortable. The insulation is perfect. I used it several times this spring in 40-70 degree nights and it completely insulated me from the ground. I imagine this will keep ground temps at bay at much colder temperatures. Now, one potential design flaw: the air valve. First, it works great! It is a combo push/pull to close/open. Also, when closing you push it and give it a 1/4 turn to lock close. It inflates and deflates very quickly. But the valve sticks straight up 90 degrees to the pad. Other pads, like therm-a-rest, have a valve that sticks out of the corner and is in in-line or parallel to the pad. The Klymit valve is unique. I often find my feet rubbing up against it at night, but that is a minor inconvenience. My real concern is long term durability of a valve that protrudes at a 90 degree angle from the pad. I give this pad 5 stars because it is an incredibly comfortable pad, is relatively lightweight, appears durable, and costs LOTS less than its competitors. Even if the valve proves the weak link after a few years, I'm willing to take a chance at the price. It's official: this long-time Therm-a-rest user is a Klymit Insulated Static V convert!! ****UPDATE 7/17/2015**** I have used this sleeping pad for over a year now with no noticeable wear. So far the valve design has proven durable and has never been an issue in the field. I like this pad so much that I bought a second one for my family to use. I highly recommend the Klymit Insulated Static V. ****UPDATE 1/4/2016**** I continue to enjoy all aspects of this sleeping pad. I grabbed a third pad for my family when it recently went on sale for approximately $60. At full price this is a great value. If you catch it on sale it is an incredible value! ****UPDATE 9/19/2016**** Just used two of my pads this past weekend for a camping trip with my daughter. Easy to pack, inflate, and comfortable in use! I've been using these pads for quite some time now and I have not noticed any wear and tear. ****UPDATE 5/10/2017**** I continue to regularly use my three Insulated Static V Sleeping pads. I recently used two pads on an overnight camping trip with my son. My original pad purchased several years ago shows no signs of wear. No leaks, tears, rips, or abrasions of any sort. I've used these pads tent camping, in an ENO hammock, and when vacationing where there is a shortage of beds. The price has increased slightly over the years, but I still believe it to be a great value and worth the cost. Keep an eye-out for sales and snag one! ****UPDATE 4/30/2018**** It's hard to believe I have been using these pads for over four years! These things continue to work great. I used three pads on an overnight camping trip with my two sons. No rips or tears despite rowdy boys jumping around. There are probably better or more advanced pads on the market in the last four years. I can't say for certain, however, because I am content with these excellent pads. ****UPDATE 7/9/2019**** Five years and still going strong! My pads have survived countless nights under the stars with my kids. Not one leak! ****UPDATE 8/12/2020**** Time flies. My pads now have six years of use and they still look brand new. I have not had any leaks. The only downside is that the price has continued to increase over the years. As of this update, the prices for a pad ranges anywhere from $78-$98. However, these still frequently drop in price to low $60 range. I'd buy more at that price, but mine won't wear out. Of all my hunting and camping kit, these pads are one of the few items where I have gotten my money's worth. ****UPDATE 3/22/2022**** Time is ticking and these pads are still kicking. No leaks. I wish all my outdoor gear was this durable.
