Chemicals are awesome
Like other reviewers have said - don't bother with other name-brand drain openers with foaming action or tools or whatever. You don't need it. I've tried them all on my gross, old, god-knows-what's-in-them NYC pipes. ALL the drains in my apt were cloggy: kitchen sink, shower, and bathroom sink. I do have long hair, so in the shower I always thought it was my hair clogging it, but even after pulling out the hair (gross), and putting in a strainer, it still wasn't getting better. I used every single type of name-brand drain clogger on ALL the drains, and for the kitchen sink and shower, it would seem to help, but never eliminate the problem. The gel or foamy stuff would just end up totally getting clogged in my bathroom sink (the worst one). The pure lye SOLVED IT. You can hear it fizzing and dissolving away whatever disgusting crap is in your pipes. It's a very strong desiccant so it basically absorbs moisture from anything - air, crap in your pipes, and skin -- so wear gloves otherwise if you come in contact with it, you'll get a nasty chemical burn. But man, it totally rocks on clearing clogged plumbing - I'm totally getting another one b/c the 1 lb is less than what I thought I needed. I think this one bottle would probably be fine for up to 2 clogged drains. More than 2 clogged drains I think you need more.
Although beware of getting too much, lye can be used to make meth, so it is regulated... don't want to raise any red flags... ;-)
