Compared to KEF, Klipsch, and Mackie
I have decent audio at home but nothing high end. Presently, I have KEF Q series, Klipsch, Technics, and Onkyo. I also have Mackie studio monitors. So while I don't have junk, you can see what I am comparing these speakers to. I was looking for a good pair of speakers for my desk at work to pair with my Topping TP22 amp (which is a fantastic amp by the way) and came across these, the Polks, and the Miccas. Since these were 6.5 instead of 4 I went with these because I work in a lab and sometimes listen at loud volumes. The Polks were some of the worst intro speakers I've ever heard. As for testing and my criteria for good....if I have to roll the EQ for them to sound good, I don't want them. Most of my amps don't have EQs, and I don't want to add components. I want highs to be crisp but not shrill. I want lows to be natural and not overriding. I want the vocals and mids to be clear and not muddy. Also, I have two different sources. I listen to Tidal lossless through a FiiO DAC and a Technics turntable. I want to be able to switch between the two without one feeling more shrill or boomy. So while I don't have all the necessary equipment to "test" my speakers, I trust the same ears that have been shopping for acoustic guitars and tube amps for a few decades. My verdict is: You will never.....NEVER.....find a better speaker for the price. It will not happen unless you luck out buying second hand. These speakers are very crisp and are as close to my Sennheiser headphones as any speaker I own. The tweeter is bright but not too harsh. They do not break up at high volumes (Note: The Topping is not the most powerful amp so that could change with a different amp). I bought my KEFs second-hand for about the same price, but if I had to choose between new KEFs and these I would buy these, and there is about 4-500$ (NEW) price difference. If you are the most discerning listener, you aren't reading this review anyway, right? If you want the best label, why are you here? If you want to save a few hundred and still enjoy folk, jazz, classical, etc. music, buy these and spend the other 300 on a better amp, DAC, or headphones. That's my 2 cents.
