More Kissing than Knitting
Okay, I'll admit it; I usually don't read romance novels. I'll also admit that I didn't care for the main title of the book either. What hooked me into giving it a try was the subtitle "Knitting in the City." Whatever works, right? I'm glad I gave it a try. What I found was a well written, witty novel featuring the self-described Neanderthal main character, Janie, who is a math whiz, trivia collector, and more than a little naive when it comes to men and relationships. I'll toss in that I'm glad that my Kindle has the dictionary lookup feature because I needed it on several occasions when Janie went off on her trivia-spouting episodes and the vocabulary got very technical. But I actually learned things I never had thought about before, so it was all good. On the other hand, there were several cases where near-homonyms (typos on steroids) were mistakenly used that resulted in some hilarious and probably unintended Malapropisms. The funniest example of this was the use of the word "brazier" instead of "brassiere" (in two places!). I guess that resulted in some hot bust lines! I can easily see this novel being made into a movie, it's that good. It's got plenty of well developed characters, romance, action, a nasty ex-boyfriend, and even a location shoot in Las Vegas. (I'll leave the fantasy choices of actors for the lead parts to each reader's imagination.) The character of Janie is complex, intelligent, funny, and extremely quirky. Quinn is everything a leading man and potential hero should be. I hope that there is a sequel in the works. The characters are worth following, and there are some issues still unresolved at the end that could form the beginnings of another story. Highly recommended, even for those readers such as I who don't normally indulge in romances.
