Excellent and Free Microsoft Office alternative
Thanks to Apache OpenOffice, I saved over $100. Instead of buying Microsoft Office I downloaded OpenOffice for free.
I installed on my Windows XP and Windows 7 machines. It installs a word processor (Writer), a spreadsheet (Calc), a presentation editor (Impress) and some other smaller programs. These are comparable to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
I'm a long-time OpenOffice user, and these applications work well for me. I can read and write my Microsoft documents and do all of my normal editing work. The UI is not the same as MS Office, but it is close enough to be familiar and intuitive for most tasks.
Note also that there is a huge collection of free extensions (and templates) for OpenOffice that can be downloaded from their website.
