Very good device but has limits and still going.
I am a profesional trucker for a living and always have a need to print and scan documents. I bought this product in Feburary of 2013, it had not been out long and was very new item not many people knew about. It has very many good and not so great feature which I will describe the best I can to help others. Ok the down side: -It is spendy and so are the ink cartridges. BUT the cartridges do seem to hold up well and are very common to find. I have had mine in for over a month of daily printing and still have not replaced them. MAKE SURE you you check and get the right ones. There are other HP ink cartridges that fit this device that DO NOT work. -This device can be noisy but its nothing out of the normal for a printer in my opinion. -The current labtop I have now does not have Bluetooth capabilities and have not had much of a chance to try that feature. I WILL ALSO WARN YOU APPLE IPHONES WITH BLUETOOTH DO NOT WORK! I have a Iphone 4S and unless you have airprint which Apple does not have for the Iphone mentiond you cannot print by bluetooth. This I would say is my biggest complaint but its not the fault of the printer as it is of the phone. I would check your smartphone and see if it has this feature if you plan to use it for that purpose. I recently bought a new Apple MacBook Pro with bluetooth and airprint it so I will update later with how that is going as I have not tried it much yet. You will need a cord for the scanning feature the device does not have the memory or capabilities to scan and send documents by bluetooth to the computer/phone. If I am incorrect on this someone can gladly let me know if their is a patch and or something I am doing wrong. YOU can scan to a memory card or USB stick which is a nice feature to have if you dont have a computer close by. -The scanner does work good EXCEPT you have to feed the documents in one by one it which isn't to big of a deal and you get used to it. Not necesairly a bad thing cause then you make sure all documents get scanned and in correnct order which some printers/scanners don't always do. Also you have to be careful and get the documents get in straight cause they can scan crooked really easy. THE UPSIDE! -The battery last a long time! The printer does go into sleep mode after a few minutes and you have to "wake" it up but it dosent seem to bother me to much. I have found it does drain fast with scanning but that does not suprise me. If you are just printing it will last quite a while. Battery does charge up quickly to and you can use it plugged in. -Printer is very good and quick for something of its size. I have not tried photos or anything of that sort but for regular documents I cannot complain. -Touch screen and menu options are nice and simple -Size and weight of the printer I think are pretty good. I am 6'2 but it dosent take up alot of space in bunk which is a big plus for me. -Scanning software is very good! FOR ONCE HP software dosent take over the computer. I like it because if you scan all it does is brings up a progress bar and then goes away when done. When the documents are done scanning it brings up the file and where its at so you can rename it and move it right away instead of hunting for it. That is one thing I was nervous about with when I first uploaded the software but so far no complaints. -Having both a scanner and printer in a device of this size makes it a sticking point for me. I know there are lots of other devices you can get the scanner and printer seperate, but it makes things just simpler. All in all I am very happy with the device. Granted it takes quite the punch in the wallet. I bought this device at Office Depot so I paid a little more. I also bought an extended repacement warranty as well. I would recommend it especially if it is going in and out of vehicles a lot. Worth the investment. I have not bought the bag that is available for this from HP. I am plan to because for such a expensive device the bag would be good to have for when it comes in and out of my truck to carry both my labtop and printer. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND if you do not need the scan portion of the device. At least for the price unless it comes down eventually. I know HP has some other good products that just print. For me I needed both so it was worth the money 100X over and overall I give it 5 stars to HP for the device, considering its the first of its kind. Hope this was helpful to you! Adam Update on this device after 2 years. -Upsides & Downsides - -The device is still going strong after 2 years of heavy use. I have not had to much trouble with device overall. -The lid hinges did break on it after about a year. But they are very flimsy and it is only a compact device so I learned to deal with the problem. Office Depots/Max "warranty" turned out to be a joke where I bought the device because they "send it in" before they will fix it or exchange it so just a warning if you buy it from either place. -Battery performance has not been affected still charges and discharges at same rate. I have had some trouble with a few inverters as it won't "activate" the charger but usually I can get it to "go". -It does need to be cleaned regularly as the parts in it are so small and will gum up with dust. Can of air usually does the trick. -The bluetooth I will say can be temperamental at times but because I'm usually scanning which requires a cord I don't use the bluetooth feature very much anymore. I will advise if you are plugging and unplugging the device a lot to spend the extra money and get a premium USB cord for it. The cheap ones wore out fast and would not give good contact for the scanner and then the job is lost. I bought a premium cord and have not had any trouble since. -I do not use this device with a mobile phone so I won't even bother commenting on that issue as I know others have asked me about it. My Macbook has been very good working with the device and has not given me any troubles. -Many people have asked me about the AirPrint feature which I might add is somewhat different than Bluetooth, honestly I cannot truthfully comment on that either as well. I don't have a compatible device and/or need/know how to use it. If anyone would care to share thoughts on this please post them as I am curious too. -I will make the recommendation again that if you buy this printer to get the HP bag that goes with it. Some people have complained that it gets too heavy. Well when you put a laptop and printer in it along with the ton of gear well yes its going to get heavy! The bag is holding a whole office and then some! The bag was well designed and their is not much you can't put in it. I know some people have asked my why in the world would I give it 5 stars. The device all depends on your own needs and what type of electronic devices (phone or computers) you are using with it. It is not compatible with some I have heard but again I am sharing my experience with what devices I am using with it. So far I have had no reason to knock its rating down. It has been a good little printer considering the hard use it has gone through. I would again give it 5 stars without hesitation and buy another one in a heartbeat if this one burnt out today!
