Takes forever to set-up, but for $99 you can't beat it
I almost gave this tablet 3 stars because it took forever customize the set-up. I consider myself a tech-savvy person, but I can see how this tablet would be very frustrating for the less technologically inclined. It's no iPad, so it isn't ready to use straight out of the box. It took about 40-50 minutes to update, then you have to set up the profiles, and then if you have any purchased Amazon content you can select what you want to add to the kids profile. I purchased this Kindle specifically for my 2-year-old, so I had no issues with the speed of the device, or the screen quality (which was perfect for standard definition) and he learned how to find the home screen and unlock the kids profile after a few tries.
Cons:
-Needs to be updated out of the box and it takes at least 40 minutes
-I wish there were a "select all" option in the Remove Freetime Content tab. I manually selected each book that I didn't want showing up on my son's profile....It took about 4 hours to select everything I wanted to block... I tried googling to see if there was an easier way but found nothing. Before I took the time to remove everything, my son was getting extremely frustrated with how much there was to choose from- he would download chapter books or get frustrated waiting for apps to download to find out he had no idea how to play them because they were for older kids. I thought since it asked for his birthdate during setup it would only show "age" appropriate content, instead it just showed the entire library.
-Download speed is less than optimal. You can't just hand over the device to your child after opening it, you have to spend quite a bit of time customizing it
-Battery doesn't last as long as an iPad, but it is decent
-Takes a while to charge
-Freetime videos only work when connected to WiFi, so be prepared if you intend to use the Kindle without internet
Pros:
-Great Value for $99 (case, warranty, Freetime subscription included for one year, no special offers)
-You can download apps like Netflix from Amazon and then add them to your kids profile
-Kids can't make purchases, change settings or switch to the adult profile without permission
-It is pretty sturdy
-Once you organize the Freetime library with the content you want, your kiddos will have plenty of options to find something they like
-Kids profile is very easy to navigate. You can add icons to the Carousel (kids profile home screen) for quick access and kids can search for books, video/ apps by the character icons.
Tips:
-If you want to make personal photos and videos available on the kids profile, then download the VLC for Fire app online (you can download it from your computer and it will automatically be sent to your Kindle, but you have to add it to the kids profile via the Freetime App on the Adults profile)
