While my wife playfully chides me over how closely I guard our personal information, it’s really a misgiving fueled by my profession in the world of risk and fraud prevention. When it comes to junk mailers and the like, I’ve taken to tearing our names and address off, and putting them into the “shred pile”. A little over the top? Yes. Is there a more efficient solution? Yes. And that’s where this handy little device comes in. This tapered roller (pictured with a quarter, for scale) is smooth and easy-to-use. Note though that a little pressure goes a long way; pressing down too firmly will yield a mostly solid black streak, instead of stamping the individual characters (pictured, right) onto the paper. The ink absorbs very well into matte envelopes, newspaper, cardboard and inserts, and here, it dries very quickly too. Since the roller surface is contoured, it’s also quite effective on mailing tubes and prescription bottles alike. For anything printed on glossy materials (or anything that contains raised text) you’re not likely to achieve complete concealment, though you can always try multiple passes, or rolling on both sides of the paper. Be warned that the jet black ink will stain very easily while it’s wet, so you’ll absolutely want to allow for more dry time on glossy items. While I love this roller—and will definitely purchase more—I do wish the ink was refillable, and that the answer wasn’t just to buy another one (at least, as of the date of this review). The manufacturer notes that ink refills would cost nearly as much as a new roller. So while it’s imperfect, their stance is perfectly understandable. This is a product that does exactly what I hoped it would, and I recommend it highly! I’d love to write more, but I’ve got to go take care of my shred pile now.
