I've given this product 4 stars because it's well constructed, BUT I want to make quite clear what you CAN'T do with this bed: put a mattress directly on top of it. Other reviews have made it sound like you can get away without a boxspring or some other solution- this isn't the case. The reason is that the two planks of wood running down the center of the bed are not flush (by about 3/8ths of an inch) with the slats running across each side. The end result is that you can easily feel a line running down the center of the mattress (and my mattress is atleast 10 inches thick). While I've been sleeping well enough, I can't imagine this setup is good for the mattress in the long term. I'll be going to Lowe's to try to get 2 thin sheets of wood to place over the slats (so that those 2 areas of the bed are even with the center of the bed). Other than that, the product is attractive, simple to put together and feels solid. I just don't want anybody else to be surprised that a bed this high off the ground doesn't naturally facilitate a mattress only setup.
