Best MacBook dock I’ve ever used
01/05/2022 - Update: one of the USB-C ports is now failing to charge any device. I've swapped multiple cords and multiple devices. All cables and devices are working correctly on the port that has not failed and when using other charging blocks. Ivanky states that these docking stations are warranted for 18 months (original purchase 09/09/2021). I've submitted a warranty request. Will update when the situation is resolved.
I want to say first that I have a strong distaste for mounted docks and refuse to use them unless I’m forced by a company (which hasn’t happened since 2016). Also that I’ve been a MacBook user since 2013 and am a full-time web developer.
I was looking for a dock that could handle dual monitors for MacBook Air and Pro and choices have always been relatively limited on that front. In 2020 I bought a Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock (F4U109) that worked just OK with a 2020 MacBook Air and 2018 MacBook Pro. My workplace replaced my 2018 Pro with a 2019 due to keyboard failure. That dock also worked just OK with the new machine. It would pretty regularly cause a panic restart and I’d report the problem, but there was never a resolution.
Enter me taking a new job… they send me a new 2019 MacBook Pro and it panic restarts 3 times the first day and daily since. Soooo that’s when I decided to look for a new dock.
I start Googling (classic move, right) and finally come upon this beast of a dock. It’s huge. A monster. Definitely not portable, but it’s awesome. I was hesitant to pull the trigger because I don’t trust glowing reviews, but here I am writing one. I’m so happy I bought this dock after a year and a half of being frustrated with the Belkin model which only offers DisplayPort (I bought probably 15 adapters because HDMI to DisplayPort and DP++ issues) and would regularly fail to extend one of my two monitors, not to mention the regular panic restarts.
The IVANKY docking station works perfectly as intended and transitions from my Pro to my Air with ease. The only cons are the size and the port cable is a bit unwieldy, but not a distraction once in place.
One last thing - another 5 star review mentions that the MacBook Air only needs one external which confused me. I wasn’t sure if there was some limitation with this dock that would prevent it from extending two monitors, but let me clarify that this docking station does extend duals on MacBook Air in case you were confused like I was.
Also my monitors are both HP 24EC. I don’t like 30”+ monitors and 4K doesn’t matter much to me so I’m not sure how performant this dock is in that regard. But if you’re looking for something that just works (like the iPhone you probably have), this is the dock for you.
Will update this review if I have any troubles.
Update 1/14/22:
I changed jobs again. They sent me an M1 MacBook Pro. No more duals. First gen M1 Macs do not extend duals and apparently there’s not even a software fix for it. This is not Ivanky’s fault. Thanks, Apple! The dock is still fine and I still swap out between machines with ease. I’ve begun using more of the expansion ports on the dock and haven’t run into even one issue. I’m used to docks being sort of problematic. This one has changed the game.
I was pretty upset that I couldn’t run duals because I tend to have at least 10 programs running and switch between screens all day long. My new employer offered a solution that I’d never consider otherwise. They sent me a 35” curved monitor (but like a really expensive one I would never buy). I was definitely NOT enthusiastic about this. As stated earlier, I despise mega sized screens, but I quickly adapted and my workflow has actually improved.
