How To Replace Tissues 101
After recently switching to a bidet + washclothes, I am befuzzled at why the last couple of generations have decided that disposable products are the way of the future. Oh well - life is full of oddities. Hopefully this review is beneficial for others considering joining the hanky community or existing members looking to resupply their hanky arsenal.
Recently, I purchased the following 4 decently rated hankies from Amazon.
- Dockers Men's 13 Piece Permanent Press Hankies, White, One Size
- Van Heusen 13 Pack Cotton Handkerchiefs Solid White
- Dockers Men's 6 Piece Hankie Fashion Pack, Asstorted, One Size
- The Organic Handkerchiefs Company Set of Medium Organic Flannel Hankies, Natural
Fellow Amazoner, here is the order in which I would recommend them to you (and why).
1) Docker's Perm Press (65% poly + 35% cotton, 16x16")
- absorbency: 15mm
- gets a loose thread once awhile
+ relatively inexpensive ($1 per hanky)
+ iron-free and dryer safe (though I personally hang-dry everything)
2) Organic (100% "organic flannel" cotton, 11x11")
- expensive ($6 per hanky, ouch)
- a bit small for folding purposes (11x11")
- a bit harder to use while performing a nasal excavation (for you fellow miners)
+ absorbency: 6mm
+ very fluffy and is appropriately substantial
+ iron-free and dryer safe
3) Docker's Fashion Handkie (100% cotton, 16x16")
- absorbency: 10mm
- needs ironing if you want it to look unused
+ iron-free
+ no loose threads
+ "fashion", adorable advertising scheme
4) Van (100% cotton, 13x13")
- absorbency: 14mm
- frequently gets loose threads
- requires ironing in order to not be useless
- thinnest hanky among these 4
+ "van 100% cotton", adorable brand bias
+ all of them fit discretely into your pocket when folded properly.
*Absorbency is a measurement of the diameter of the circle produced by dropping 1/4 a tsp of tap water onto the center of an unfolded hankie placed on a flat surface. I know a bucket of water would be more realistic for most of us, but this test is easier to reproduce.
While Organic's hankies are probably better, I'm personally satisfied with Dockers. Dockers have a closer consistency to those evil facial tissues.
Summary:
- choose Dockers and/or Organic
- every brand has their own abbreviation for the word "handkerchief"
- don't always trust the majority (i.e. Van are the most popular hankies on Amazon)
- this is what a poorly structured review looks like
