Pretty much my favorite cooking device in the world.
Okay, I'm not a foodie...far from it. Nor do I get excited by cooking equipment all that much. I sort of enjoyed getting a panini press at some point, but to me it was just another thing to clean. So my lovely girlfriend and I were driving to NY once, and she happened to bring up the idea, in passing, of drying your own fruits. Since I eat a ton of fruits and veggies, it sort of just hit me.. I had never thought about the idea...hell, I never even knew that dehydrators existed. While she drove I quickly google'd these alleged dehydrators... The rest is history.. I went all out and got the one with the timer (I really...really suggest dropping the extra cash for this upgraded model. You don't have to worry about over "cooking" anything or waking up at like 5 am to turn the thing off)
So far I've dehydrated: Bananas, Eggplant slices, Yellow Squash slices, Kabocha Squash, Butternut Squash, Apple slices, pear slices, pineapple slices, mushrooms, blueberries, and oranges.
Everything...minus the oranges, came out fan-freaking-tastic. The oranges were actually gross...will not do that again... But seriously, my mother would throw out bananas that were too ripe for her. NOPE. Grab those suckers, and dehydrate 'em. Then they last far far far longer.
Seriously.. if you like fruit/veggie chips, and wish to make snacks to go, grab some fruits, dehyrdrate 'em over night, and you're set.
