Scotchgard comparison
I did a water test on two different couches with two coats of both Scotchgard and Fabric Defense. Without either product, both couches absorbed the water readily. With either protectant, both couches repelled the water entirely. Both protectants are immediately stinky and make you light-headed, but I could not detect a trace of odor with close up sniff tests on the couches a few days later. Repeated water tests a few days later had the same results.
The difference between the two is that Scotchgard changes the feel of the fabric quite a bit, but Fabric Defense was barely noticeable. The Scotchgard treated area became very course and rough. I get the feeling Scotchgard would work better longer but its changing of couch texture and the low price of Fabric Defense makes it the clear winner for me.
