Spledid fantasy
This is a splendid fantasy epic with all of the things that make fantasy stories grand- swords, sorcerers, magic and derring-do. The young hero, Thor, is more than the simple country bumpkin he first appears to be. Armed with only courage and the deep desire to join in his king's Legion, Thor runs away from home to find his destiny, never knowing how different from the rest of his family he really is.
I won't do a book report or give any spoilers but rest assured- if you like lots of action, and intricate story lines, magical creatures, and horrifying monsters, knights in armor and royal intrigue- this book is for you.
Positives- This book has wonderful pacing, really good descriptive passages, and outstanding character build-up. It has has some very nice twists and turns... who would YOU trust in a royal court, when almost everyone you meet is either out for blood or some sort of political gain? Well done, Ms Rice- I WILL buy the rest of this series because I truly care about what happens to young Thor.
Negatives- there are quite a few spelling errors and typos, which are all the more disturbing since the rest of the novel is so darned good. I don't know whether this book is self-pubbed or through a publisher, but the book really need a second set of eyes to spot these annoying nits, since they diminish the book's quality. (These are silly things like woulds, instead of woods--- or foul rather than fowl)
This highly accomplished author does herself, and her readers, a disservice by not dropping the book for a day, or so, while the novel undergoes a final polish.
The positives far outweigh the negatives however, and I applaud Rice's new addition to the fantasy field. Highly recommended!
