Input lag hurts, but there is a workaround
Update - Apologies for not updating this sooner, to be honest I've been playing with the NES Classic quite a bit. As I mentioned in my original review, and as some friendly and not-so friendly comments referenced, hooking up the NES Classic directly to the TV and then setting the TV to 'Game' Mode significantly reduced (but did not quite alleviate) the input lag. I have been enjoying the full list of games, and this really is a great piece of nostalgia. The reason for the four stars is still due to the unbelievably short cables. Once the wireless controllers and/or cable extensions are available this system will be complete and I really look forward to the day Nintendo releases the SNES Classic.

My wife was one of the very rare and lucky people to grab one of these on Amazon before the site crashed on Friday. It was delivered today, and I unboxed it right away to start playing.
Everyone knows the controller cable is short. But unless you have one, you really have no idea just how short that cable actually is. It's horrible, but does keep you within arms reach of the console, which is required to hit the reset button to switch games.
But the ultimate reason for the 2 star rating is because of input lag. Its quite common when playing older games/systems on new TVs, but this lag makes 25 out of 30 games unplayable. Want to dodge a punch in Punch Out? Better hit that left direction a full second before the punch actually comes. Want to jump across voids in Super Mario Bros with only a single block in the middle to land on? Not going to happen. Need to make a quick direction change in any side scrolling game? Too bad, you are going to fall, get hit, or die.
I will be experimenting with configurations, but with the short power and controller cables my options will be limited. Direct connection to the TV instead of a receiver, no HDMI extensions, "game" modes on the TV and/or receiver will all be checked. If I can get this lag improved, I'll update this review and increase the stars. But until then, Final Fantasy is one of the few games I can play currently.
