They key is to add liquids.
I bought this particular blender to make homemade baby food and purees for my little one. Of course everyone wants to own a Vitamix, but not everyone can afford it—so we seek out the next best thing. I wanted a blender that wouldn't take too much counter space, was easy to clean, and powerful enough to make purees and smooth liquid-like textures. Not to mention, easy on the wallet. My first (regretful) purchase was a Ninja—I returned that thing a week later. It left un-pureed clumps! So a NutriBullet was my next option. Like you, the thing that sold me on this particular belnder was the 1700 watt power—you would think a stronger motor equals a more powerful machine. In this case, a stronger motor equals hot soup. With regards to the usage, I guess anything you blend in this thing must include a liquid (also states that in the manual) So if you're making baby food, you must add distilled water or milk. If your making a smoothie or soup, you need to add milk, water or stock. Minus one star for the necessary liquids. Otherwise, everything comes out so smooth and my little one gobbles up every bite I puree. Bonus points on the soup-er-blend. The soups do come out really good and hot!! *I rely on amazon for reviews of nearly everything before I buy. I like to give back to the community by reviewing items myself.
