Top 10 Considerations For Whether You Should Buy This Professional-Grade MX Master Mouse
This mouse is targeted at the professional user—i.e. spreadsheet monkeys, engineers, and content creators. While I’m sure it would work well for gaming and casual users, this review is targeted toward those of us who use a mouse for 8+ hours a day and don’t mind spending $100 for a top-of-the-line piece of hardware. After all, there are only two inputs we have into our computer: the mouse and the keyboard. For those us using computers to make our livings, it may make sense to splurge…I couldn't wait for Prime shipping and went to Best Buy to pick one up locally…and the MX Master truly delivers. To consider whether this makes sense for you to upgrade, consider the following features. 1. Speed-Adaptive Scroll Wheel. This is a GAME CHANGER. Fly through long PDF files. I upgraded from a G700 (never used any of the hardcore gaming features but appreciated the multitude of hotkeys). That mouse also had the hyperfast scroll and click-to-click scroll which all Logitech users are familiar with. However, those were two separate modes. Meanwhile, the MX Master intelligently switches between modes depending on how much force you put on it without the need for manually-shifting. (There’s zero need for the included mode switch button because you will ALWAYS want to have it on adaptive mode.) This is an incredibly welcome improvement and works very intuitively. 2. Bluetooth Connectivity. In today’s world of disappearing USB ports, a Bluetooth mouse can help to free up what would otherwise be a dedicated Unifying Receiver USB port. I’m talking to you, 2015 Macbook. This is possibly the best Bluetooth enabled mouse on the market. (To clarify, it ALSO works with Unifying Receivers.) 3. Gesture Button. This is a hidden button under where your thumb would rest. By pressing and swiping your mouse up/down/left/right, it performs a function. By default: maximize, show desktop, snap left, and snap right, respectively. Fortunately, you can switch the functionality to any keystroke combo using the software. So I switched mine to: left = back, right = forward, up = maximize, down = minimize. Much better! Find what works for you. Mac Users rejoice too because you get some of their touchpad functionality back in a mouse: mission control, app expose, and swiping between open apps. Admittedly, I can see how, for Mac users, it’s a far more intuitive and effective UI than any other existing mouse that attempts to mimic this functionality. Feature does take some getting used to, but it works. 4. Multiple Device Connectivity. You can connect to up to three different computers. This is great if you have separate computers for personal and professional use. I keep my mouse at home for my personal PC. But when I have to work from home, it’s virtually seamless to switch and connect the same mouse to the Unifying Receiver on my company-issued laptop. 5. Horizontal Scroll Wheel. Excel Jockeys rejoice. Yes, when preparing spreadsheets, the keyboard is king. But when reviewing spreadsheets, the ability to scroll left and right in a natural manner with a dedicated side wheel is a very welcome feature. It provides far more control than tilting the scroll wheel left and right in my G700. Other software-based options are available for this scroll wheel, but none worth mentioning for the professional user. 6. Thumb Buttons. I set these to Ctrl+Pg Up and Ctrl+Pg Down to flip through tabs Chrome and, more importantly, through tabs in spreadsheets. Admittedly, I do miss the extra two buttons on my G700 which I had set to forward/back for websites, but I’ll get used to the new gesture functionality. 7. Battery. In lieu of replaceable batteries, it comes with a built-in rechargeable battery. Time will tell how well the lithium polymer battery holds up. So far, no issues and there’s no reason to disbelieve Logitech’s battery life claims…although not many of us have six-hour workdays. 8. Aesthetics. This mouse is Logitech’s most beautiful mouse to date. Results may vary for left-handers. 9. Size. This is a full-sized mouse…and yes, is very comfortable. However, if you’re looking to take it between home and the office, a smaller option like the outstanding (albeit fragile) MX Anywhere is more appropriate. 10. Warranty. One year is not great for an unproven mouse and battery design because it’d be a tragedy to have a $100 paperweight after one year. However, I have worked with Logitech customer support for my MX Anywhere mice and they've been great in providing warranty replacements for valid claims. So cross your fingers that you can get at least about three years out of this mouse despite the lack of a 3-yr warranty. Summary: Buy this mouse if you: (1) are a heavy computer user for business, (2) have limited USB ports, (3) use a separate personal and professional computer, and/or (4) can justify $100 on the latest and greatest. Consider alternative offerings if you: (1) are on a budget, (2) are primarily looking for a gaming mouse, (3) are looking for a portable mouse to take from home to the office daily, (4) want to wait until this mouse has a more established track record or (5) are left handed. Hope that helps you in your decision! So far, I’m very happy with my purchase.
