How Good Could a $30 Tracker be? Let's Find Out!
Let's just jump right into it! The attached video was taken a week after purchase of the UWatch2. I was actually a bit more surprised than I thought I would be. I guess I expected a bit of a buggy so-so product at this price range; however after a week I am still using it over my Fitbit Charge 2 (Gunmetal Series). Opening the little square box, the UWatch greets you - with just it's face (at least after you remove the "thank you" card from Umidigi). As you lift it up out the box and the cardboard packing, you'll notice the metal band coiled up behind the watch body. Digging into the box further you'll find the alternate sports band (silicone), manual, charging cord and extra set of "pins" in case you want to use yet another band. I stuck with the metal band which was surprising comfortable and stayed in place. I initially thought the watch may appear to large on my wrist, especially having used the Fitbit Charge 2 for so long. But it fine, simple and bit elegant all at once. It's not a multi-hundred dollar piece of tech but that leave money for other things! The watch faces are changeable, I choose more a square one because the circular ones seem too small to me - like a little circle in a larger circle. The watch charges via a provided cable (no AC adapter included) that has a USB connect on one end and a magnetic charging port on the other. The magnetic port will only attach one way on the watch - i.e. it cannot be reversed. The charging port being magnetic will also stick to the metal band so make sure you have it on the back of the watch and it's charging (hint, check the LED light and if on then it's charging. The app you'll use with the UWatch2 is call "Da Fit". Seems to be a bit of a generic app that can be used with various fitness trackers/smartwatch manufacturers. It found my UWatch2 and paired up quickly enough. It defaults to metric measurements so find the "other" setting for the watch in the app and you can change that for us folks here in the USA (not sure if anyone else uses our measurements anymore!) The app gives you place to see all you activity and measurements for the day or month. It also is where updates will be received and then pushes the firmware update to the UWatch2 (I had one right out the box). You can also download an additional face for the UWatch (face 4 gets replaced with whatever you download). You have various functions the main one being the step counter. You can time various other exercises as well (similar to my Fitbit). The UWatch2 also had Heart Rate, Blood Pressure and Blood Oxygen readings - although I wonder how accurate the last two could really be? The readings seem to be normal and do change so I supposed it's using some way to measure it all. Swipe to the side to see your last "training" activity, another swipe to see your step count and yet another to see your sleep time. Swiping up and down transfers you from the various menus for be aforementioned measurements and training as well as settings, timer, and phone functions like messages, camera and media player as well as weather. pressing any of the icons takes you into that function of the watch. I'll break these down below. UWatch2 Fitness Functions: Press the training icon and you can select Walking, Running, Cycling, Skipping (jump rope), Badminton, Basketball and Football (Soccer). Manual says there are 8 but these are the only 7 I saw. Of course it tracks the number of steps automatically giving you a distance and calorie burn count as well. There is also the Heart Rate, Blood Pressure and Blood Oxygen (SpO2) all which have a "Click to measure" button to start the measurement. Some times these do take a while to get you the reading. UWatch2 Phone Functions: I'm calling these phone functions because they get info from the phone or are used to control parts/apps on the phone. First up is the messages. You setup which apps send notifications to your UWatch2 via the "Da Fit" app. It can store the most recent 3 messages. So if you have all your apps sending notifications, chances are you'll miss some. Weather is setup using Da Fit app to set a location and then you can get the Weather forecast assuming you are connected to your phone via Bluetooth. Shutter controls the camera on your phone and I can kind of seeing a use for it. At first I thought it just a redundant feature since most camera's have a counter already; however I guess it makes sense if you want to set the phone (camera) up and walk back without trying to beat the timer, make sure everyone is ready and then just press the shutter on your wrist. The media play was a bit like the shutter for me - you have the controls on the phone screen for the music player when the phone is locked and with my phone having gesture I always use that to control the music. But being able to leave the phone in my pocket and lift my wrist and then control the music does have a bit of a draw to it and I found myself using the UWatch2 while walking and listening to my music. I haven't really used the alarms or the stop watch features yet. I have used the other settings on the UWatch2 to increase the brightness to allow me to see the watch face in bright sunlight. I have also played around with switch styles from the watch setting instead of using the app. The UWatch2 also has a reminder to move (kind of funny that it shows a guy sitting in a chair) and when you reach your set goal you are rewarded with a medal (sorry no fireworks). The fact that this UWatch2 does what my older Fitbit Charge2 does at a fraction of the costs is a bit surprising. I've bought other Umidigi products in the past (A1 Pro, A3 and the Q1 wireless charger) and the products seem to good and it's hard to bash something that cost so reasonable - especially if it actually works! I'll probably be wearing this UWatch2 for some time now and will update if there are any new developments. For instance, for a complete review I just swapped to the sport band by replacing the metal band - took only seconds to swap with the easy to use "pins". Update 5/14/20 - I felt I should update this review to provide additional insight into this product. I initially was amazed at all the features but have since become aware that it's not as good as I had hope - basically inaccurate. I didn't notice initially because truthfully I don't count calories or track mileage, I track number of steps to reach a step count per day. The other stuff was just icing on the cake for me. For me it still has some features I like, so here's a quick pro/con list after owning it for a while... Pros: Sleep tracker on the watch (you don't need to hop into the app), downloadable clock faces, Weather - todays and next 5 day forecast, Music controls So-So: Remote Shutter (for phone camera), IP67 rating Cons: Inaccurate distance and calorie count, only last 3 messages available, square LCD inside a round body causes a huge border for round dial faces, questionable Blood pressure and SPO2 readings - I read there was a firmware update that removed these but that must only be in certain countries as it's still on mine. Also understand the 4 star rating (down fro 5) is due to how I use this watch - or used this watch I should say. The items that are Cons I don't really use to begin with EXCEPT the message and round dial faces. Price would have been a Pro but they have actually increased the price since I wrote my initial review. I'd expect it to be $25 or less now.
