Great tool for troubleshooting
First off, I used the recommended app "Torque Pro". It was $5 in the app store. And they are good about responding to emails.
Does exactly what it says it does. Now, there is a caveat that your vehicle may not send the specific data you want through the OBDII port. For instance, I initially purchased this because I was wanting to know the gear my transmission was in. Unfortunately, my vehicle doesn't report this data via the OBDII using this device. I would be able to access this data using a very expensive mechanics scanner (several hundred dollars) but that's a big nope for me. It was more for curiosity than practical reasons.
Basically, unless you find someone with your same make, model, and year who already bought this reader, you won't know if it'll report more unusual data. You can be pretty sure it'll report all of the basics, like coolant temperature, rpm's, check and erase error codes, speed, vacuum pressure, throttle position sensor, etc.
It was extremely useful in tracking down an issue with the throttle position sensor. I had a code P0122, replaced the sensor but same problem. Did the standard multimeter voltage tests and it seemed okay. But when I hooked up with BAFX reader the truck's computer wasn't reporting any TPS data at all. Turns out I received a bad sensor (they're cheapo crappy plastic sensors even from the OEM manufacturer, poor QC). I had to go through two more sensors but the third one worked just fine and showed good TPS data on the BAFX reader.
