Great device to have in your OBD II car
Bought this in August of 2015 and have loved having it available. I keep this unit in my road trip travel box so it's always with me when I'm away from home. If you've ever been on the road far from home and had a CEL(Check engine light) pop up on your dash in an obd II car(1995 cars and newer use obd2), it sucks. Having this device with you helps to know if you have a serious issue or it may just be a simple problem where you maybe forgot to tighten your gas cap.
You will still need some low level knowledge to know what codes mean, but the free version of the app gives you the ability to see trouble codes on your obd2 cars and even do a quick internet search from the app to see common causes of the error in question.
In addition to scanning codes on the free version of the app, there is also functionality to reset codes after fixing the issues and to see so many stats, such as throttle position, readings from o2 sensors, obd2 readiness state(which shows if your car is ready to inspect after resetting codes or just determining if specific systems have gathered enough data to give results), approximate fuel consumption, speed, etc. There is also a paid version of the app you can get to give you more in depth stats and specs to watch operations on the car and troubleshoot a little deeper on a sensor by sensor level. This is by no means a full replacement for full on system diagnostics machines, but it does a pretty good job for such a portable device that you can carry anywhere you go for very little money. If you don't have a smart phone, that cost changes a bit, but most people these days already have a smart phone capable of working with this unit in their pocket.
If you are technology challenged, getting the app installed on the phone and syncing it up is not rocket science, but may be difficult for some. If you have a basic level of ability on your smart phone to pair bluetooth, pair wifi, install apps, etc, this shouldn't give you any problems. It's pretty basic and intuitive.
This has come in extremely handy on my own cars as well as helping friends who are having issues with their cars. You can go to most autoparts stores and get a free CEL code readout, but I don't always trust them, as I have seen some big box auto store employees not use proper care when plugging into obd 2 ports, so I'd rather do it myself. These are small and cheap enough to carry in the glove box of any cars you have that are obd2(1995 and newer should use obd2). Definitely worth the cost and if mine ever fails I will buy another, immediately, without hesitation.
