OK lets get this out of the way right at the front. YES THIS PRODUCE OZONE. now that that is out of the way... The previous reviewers that are trying to scare you out of buying this because it produces ozone don't know how ozone works apparently. 1.) Yes this produces ozone but it is such MINISCULE amounts that i can actually hold it up to my face and it doesn't bother me. I will mention now that I have SEVERAL commercial ozone machines used to deodorize disgusting rooms and cars. I can only run a SMALL ozone machine for maybe 5 minutes in a medium sized room before my eyes and throat are ready to crawl out of my body and say "f this guy, he's an idiot" YOU SHOULD NOT BREATHE OR EXPOSE YOUR TISSUES TO OZONE. That said, this machine produces such a tiny amount that you can barely even smell it, and that ozone almost instantly combines with other ozone to form dioxygen, YOU KNOW THAT STUFF WE NEED TO LIVE? 2.) This device has a sensor that detects proximity, and it STOPS PRODUCING OZONE WHEN SOMETHING IS NEAR IT. IT DOESN'T NOT SPRAY OZONE IN YOUR KITTIES FACE. IF IT DID, your cat would never come near it again after the first time, because ozone smells like bleach and burns your eyes. None of my cats avoid the litter box with this device sitting right above it, so i know it works, but in case you are worried, the giant blue light on the device tells you when it is producing ozone and when it is not. 3.) how ozone works to eliminate smells. Ozone is a single molecule of 3 Oxygen atoms. it is not stable. it immediately seeks out another molecule of something to combine with and therefore become stable. USUALLY this is another ozone molecule which then makes it O2, that aforementioned thing we all need to live. however SOME of the ozone will instead find other molecules like stinky cat smells, and it will then combine with them, thereby OXEDIZING them, and making them into a different molecule. This serves two purposes, the first is to change the chemical properties, it's not the same chemical anymore after the combination, so it has new properties, usually meaning it doesn't smell as bad. the second is it makes the molecule physically heavier than the rest of the air so it sinks to the bottom of wherever it is (your litter box hopefully. Hotels use these machines to clear out the smell in a room when someone dies in them, that is how effective they are. The only bad thing about this device is that the batteries only last about 4 days, and then you have to recharge it. I am considering getting a second one so I always have one in use.
