A speaker worth at least three times it's price
I'm not a paid amazon reviewer. I ONLY review things that seriously impress me (or upset me!). I'm 15 minutes into listening to Mumford and Sons and Gary Clark Jr on this speaker (I test my speakers with music like this because they incorporate a wide array of instruments (percussion, electronic, strings, woodwinds, brass etc...) and give good spectrum of range and volume) and I am quite blown away. Out of the box the sound is extremely warm and full. Really impressed with how well it fills out the lows and how crystal clear the vocals and higher pitches are, especially at the lowest volume. I can't wait to listen to this thing mature with some more playing. And I'm only listening via bluetooth right now. I expect a direct aux connection to make it even better. At under $200, this speaker is a steal...and I'm remarkably judicious in the praise I give audio equipment. Rest assured, I already did the 20+ hours of researching the best wireless or bluetooth speaker that you can find for under $300. My original list of 15 speakers whittled down to the HK Onyx 2, Sonos 3, and UE Megaboom. The Bose Soundlink sounds decent, but whenever I see the namebrand "Bose," the only impression I get is "pop culture tells me this is quality audio, so I bought it" instead of actually knowing quality audio and picking something out based on performance. UE Megaboom is wonderful, and I highly recommend it, but I chose against it because it's just plain ugly. I was looking for something sleek and clean to tuck up above the kitchen cabinets, and the Megaboom (to me) says "crank me up to volume 11 then pass me like a football and kick me over because I'm indestructible" -- it's likely I'll buy one for a travel speaker though. The Sonos is also great, they know what it takes to me a good speaker, and it shows. Their operating system is also quite simple, clean, and reliable. The deciding factor was $300 for something I know I love, or risk $160 on something that might wow me. Since I'm not currently running a Sonos system around the house, I decided to give the HK a shot, and I couldn't be more pleased that I did. I figured the dispersed organization of the drivers and tweeters on the HK would give an interesting dynamic, but it's far better than I could have imagined. Sonos fills a room well, but at it's core is a box system limited by it's shape. The hemisphere design of the HK Onyx 2 makes it sound like you're running two or three speakers to fill the space. Very impressive. It's very likely that a couple more of these will outfit other rooms in the house. Stop your searching, you probably have real work to do. Buy this speaker, rest assured you made the right decision, and get back to your work. Then enjoy once it arrives!
