It works! But there are some things you should know...
If you have a lot of tapes you need to copy, this is hands down the easiest way to do it. It has some quirks, but overall it works really well. I've only used this to copy voice recordings, and I've done it on manual. Below are some good aspects, bad aspects, and things you should know.
The good:
- It's easy! Start it and leave it.
- As soon as you unplug the flash drive, the MP3 is ready for you.
The bad:
- If you tell it to switch sides, it will switch sides indefinitely. So if you have 60 minutes per side, and leave it running overnight, it'll capture the entire tape about four times.
- It won't stop recording on its own. If your flash drive is big enough, you won't notice, but it'll take your computer an extra few minutes to snip off the dead recording.
Things you should know:
- It DOES NOT work with flash drives formatted as exFAT!!! I bought a high speed samsung 64GB flash drive to use with it, and it would corrupt the flash drive every time. Windows 10 only gives me the option to format the drive as exFAT or NTFS. However, I quickly found some freeware that let me format the drive to FAT32, and I've had zero issues since then.
- It wants a fast flash drive. I haven't tested it long term with a slower drive, but I spent an extra $13 and got a fast 64GB flash drive. Just know you'll need to format it to FAT32 since exFAT isn't going to work.
- You have to create a folder in the flash drive called TAPEMP3. I think the device was supposed to create this folder, but mine never did, and it wouldn't work correctly until I created the folder.
- It won't stop recording until you tell it to stop. The tape will stop, but the device will continue to record nothingness until you ask it to stop.
In the end, if you have more than a couple of old tapes you need converted to digital, buy this device with a new flash drive. You'll have a few minutes of unpleasantness getting this ready to go, but once it's setup and you know what it's going to do, it's incredibly easy to use.
